This is one of the most interesting things to understand for getting your ECFMG certificate.

ECGMF pathways for International Medical Graduates:

Let’s just start with basics! So to get ECFMG certification, we need two requirements. Imagine pathway is a road to reach a place to get your certificate.

These are the following two requirements for a certificate:

1) Medical education credentials—which are your degree certificate and medical school transcripts.

2) Pathway approval—which basically needs USMLE exams plus clinical and communication skills.

These two parts do not have any connection with each other. You can complete either requirement independently, without affecting the progress of the other.

1) # Medical credential verification—Once you graduate from medical school and receive your medical degree. You have to upload only a medical degree through my Intealth to start this process of credential verification. After receiving your degree from your end, ECFMG will send a request to verify your degree and medical education to your medical school. For this purpose they send a FORM 321A, in which the medical school has to fill out all the details regarding your medical education and date of graduation. Also, the medical school has to verify whether the degree you uploaded is authentic or not. At the same time, the medical school has to upload your degree and medical school transcript along with a completed Form 321A.

After receiving these 3 things from medical school, ECFMG usually reviews those documents. If accepted, it means ECFMG has verified that you graduated from an accredited medical school that is listed in WDOMS. This process ends here once your credential is verified.

2) Pathway application -

The second requirement for the ECFMG certificate is the Medical Licensing Exams (Step 1 and Step 2), clinical skills, and communication skills.

There are a total of 6 pathways, and each pathway has a different requirement to verify these 3 things.

Most people in India use pathway 1, as we get an unsupervised license to practice medicine immediately after graduation. Pathway 1 has 3 different parts to fulfill requirements for all 3 things:

  1. USMLE step 1 and step 2 exam passing score

  2. Good standing certificate from licensing authorities

  3. Communication skills through Passing OET score

The first one is simple; you just have to pass both exams, and that’s it.

Second is the Good Standing Certificate—the preferred method is that your GSC is directly sent to ECFMG by your licensing authorities.

The third part is to pass OET exams with specific grades, such as a minimum of 300 in writing and 350 in listening, speaking, and reading.

And once you apply for the pathway after all of these requirements, it will be approved after a review.

So, I would say the pathway is a crucial step. Once your pathway is approved, ECFGM checks whether this individual has a credential verified or not. If so, they will issue an ECMFG certificate, which will expire based on the year you applied. Basically, if your medical education is not verified (Step 1), your certificate will not be issued even if your pathway is approved. Pathways will be active until the expiry date; you can get your credential verified during this time, and once your medical education credentials are verified. You are all set to get your certificate!
